Pen to Paper

To the regret of pen collectors, much of the history of pen manufacture has been lost in time. This is partly because, for many of the people who worked at those factories, it was just a job, and nobody expected that the commodity they manufactured would become a collectable of the future. Malcolm Troak’s book is a record covering 85 years of the Newhaven factory, which is now Parker HQ.

Malcolm started work at the Parker Newhaven factory as a Toolmaker in 1953 and retired as Group Managing Director in 1993. This book contains photographs, plans and recollections, many supplied by a number of “old hands”, as well as Malcolm’s own observations, to complete a history of the factory that began in 1921 as “Felix Pen Works”.

Pen Shows

The Los Angeles Pen Show was up to a high standard with the usual large crowd on Sunday. Amongst this frenetic activity I looked up and witnessed a person helping himself from another dealers table. I followed, then chased and had a hand in catching this thief, who was taken away in handcuffs.

My next show is Chicago, and as a precursor I’m visiting Fort Madison, Iowa, the home of the soon to be closed Sheaffer factory.

Quotations

When we remember that we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained

Mark Twain 1835-1910

Blast From the Past

From a January 1940 Stationery Trade Journal.

The front of Conway Stewart’s Factory and Showrooms in late 1939. The ground floor protected by a buttress of 3-inch timbers, reinforced by over 3000 sandbags. Note the white painting on the mudguards of the car for visibility in night driving without lights.

Parker 61/65 Connector

The cartridge/converter filling Parker 61 and most Parker 65 pens used a plastic connector, which eventually cracks/disintegrates with age. The first sign of this is usually a leak into the barrel. We now have a solid brass replacement part.
